San Francisco Football Legends Take On ALS

*Around 1990, 27 former 49er football player veterans who were formerly members of the “Team of the 80’s” and other dignitaries wanted to do something to raise money for ALS research. They rallied on the “sidelines” and came up with the idea to share their collective memories with the public of their days on and off the playing field that would be sold on video tape (the popular format of the time) to raise money for ALS research. In October of 2017 when Dwight Clark passed from ALS it was decided that the time was right to resurrect this project and possibly even, stimulate a sequel of more recent stories for the same purpose.  The oral histories presented here are time-capsule precious and give 49er fans a good look into the history of the beginning of football in San Francisco. Time has passed and a cure for ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) is yet to be found. This presentation is the dream these athletes had as their way to help. Now in DVD format, ALL PROFITS FROM THE SALES WILL BE DONATED TO ALS RESEARCH as was originally conceptualized by this special group of 49er veterans. To buy this DVD Visit 1000+Video

The San Francisco 49ers have selected Nick Bosa with the second-overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Bosa (6-foot-4, 266 pounds) joins a star-studded 49ers defensive line alongside DeForest Buckner and Dee Ford. Bosa had four sacks in three games last season before missing the rest of the year with an abdominal injury. He posted 8.5 sacks and 16 tackles for loss as a sophomore in 2017. Bosa was the consensus top pass rusher in this year’s class, and NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein compared him to Michael Bennett.

He’s known as a technician who is great with his hands at the point of attack. It’s well documented that Bosa has a football pedigree, most recently with brother Joey Bosa being taken third overall by the Los Angeles Chargers back in 2016. Nick is expected to be every bit as productive in the NFL.

“Nick’s a heck of a player,” John Lynch said of Bosa during his pre-draft press conference. “He’s one we really enjoyed studying throughout this process.”

Lynch also noted that Bosa was beloved by his teammates at Ohio State. The 49ers have now selected a defensive lineman in the first round in four out of the last five drafts: Arik Armstead (2015), Buckner (2016), Solomon Thomas (2017) and Bosa. A pass rush headlined by Bosa, Ford and Buckner should be one of San Francisco’s absolute strengths in 2019.

We’ll have more on the 49ers first-round pick shortly.

49ers Select Deebo Samuel with No. 36 Pick in 2019 NFL Draft

With the 36th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers have selected South Carolina wide receiver Deebo Samuel.

Samuel (5-foot-11, 214 pounds) caught 62 passes for 882 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2018 for the Gamecocks. The 49ers know Samuel very well having coached him at the 2019 Senior Bowl back in January. He followed up an impressive week in Mobile, Ala., with a standout performance at the NFL Scouting Combine. Samuel ran a 4.48 40-yard dash in Indianapolis.

“It’s a great selection with the San Francisco 49ers,” Charles Davis said on NFL Network.

NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein praised Samuel’s toughness and said he approaches each game “like he’s stepping into an alley fight.”

The pick was announced by DeMarcus Cobb, son of 49ers late area scout Reggie Cobb.

“Reggie Cobb was one of the most liked guys in the personnel community,” Daniel Jeremiah said.

Davis played with Cobb at the University of Tennessee and shared a heartwarming tribute about his friend. Cobb passed away suddenly last Saturday due to a heart attack.

Samuel will compete with Dante Pettis, Marquise Goodwin and Kendrick Bourne for reps lined up outside in Kyle Shanahan’s offense this season.

49ers Select WR Jalen Hurd with No. 67 Pick in 2019 NFL Draft

With the 67th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers selected Baylor wide receiver Jalen Hurd.

Hurd was a former Tennessee running back before transferring to Baylor and changing positions to receiver. He, like Deebo Samuel, was coached by the 49ers at the 2019 Senior Bowl as a member of the South Team.

Hurd (6-foot-5, 226 pounds) posted 69 receptions for 946 yards and four touchdowns in 2018 for the Bears. He missed a bulk of the pre-draft process with a knee injury. Prior to transferring to Baylor, Hurd played at Tennessee for three seasons, scoring 26 total touchdowns.

“You need a creative offensive coordinator for Jalen Hurd because he can do a little bit of everything,” Daniel Jeremiah said on NFL Network’s broadcast following the pick. “It’s going to be a fun matchup for Kyle Shanahan in the 49ers offense.”

Jeremiah praised Hurd’s ability as a fluid runner with the ball in his hands. NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein said that Hurd has elite size and length with plus athleticism. Hurd immediately becomes the biggest receiver on the 49ers roster.

Much like Jerick McKinnon, Hurd will be able to line up all over the field (including running back). That means Shanahan has likely already envisioned how he’ll utilize another Swiss army knife.

49ers Select P Mitch Wishnowsky with No. 110 Pick in 2019 NFL Draft

With the 110th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers selected Utah punter Mitch Wishnowsky.

Wishnowsky (6-foot-2, 218 pounds) owns a career 45.7-yard punt average over three years at Utah. The Australia native won the Ray Guy award back in 2016 and is considered one of the top punters in this year’s draft. There were 100 total return yards over his last 106 punts.

San Francisco acquired the 110th pick after trading back from No. 104 in a deal with the Cincinnati Bengals. The 49ers also acquired two sixth rounders (Nos. 183 and 198) in the trade.

Wishnowsky is an impressive athlete as he ran a 4.63 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine. He’s the odds on favorite to replace Bradley Pinion in 2019 and beyond, but he’ll have to beat out Justin Vogel in order to claim the job. Wishnowsky has kickoff experience as well, which would add to his value as Pinion’s replacement. Pinion handled kickoff duties during his four-year tenure in San Francisco. Wishnowsky kicked off 68 times with 45 touchbacks for the Utes.

49ers Select LB Dre Greenlaw with No. 148 Pick in 2019 NFL Draft

With the 148th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the 49ers selected Arkansas linebacker Dre Greenlaw.

Greenlaw (5-foot-11, 237 pounds) recorded 321 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, four sacks and three interceptions over four seasons with the Razorbacks. Lance Zierlein of NFL.com called him a “run and chase” WILL linebacker.

“I like his short-area quickness and what he did in the passing game,” Daniel Jeremiah said on NFL Network’s broadcast. “He’s very instinctive against the pass.”

Zierlein added that his speed and athleticism will give Greenlaw a chance to stand out as a special teams ace. On defense, he’ll provide depth behind Fred Warner and Kwon Alexander. His primary competition on the depth chart will be David Mayo and Malcolm Smith.

The 49ers acquired the 148th pick from the Denver Broncos in exchange for linebacker Dekoda Watson and pick No. 212.

49ers Select TE Kaden Smith with No. 176 pick in 2019 NFL Draft

With the 176th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers have selected Stanford tight end Kaden Smith.

Smith (6-foot-5, 255 pounds) caught 70 passes for 1,049 yards and seven touchdowns over two seasons for the Cardinal. He ran a 4.92 40-yard dash at the Combine and posted a 32-inch vertical jump. Lance Zierlerin of NFL.com describes Smith as a pass catching tight end who gives good effort as a run blocker but will need to improve in that area. Smith opted to forgo his senior year at Stanford and declare for the NFL Draft.

His size is “slightly above average” among NFL starting tight ends, and Stanford’s pro-style offense should help ease his transition. Smith joins George Kittle, Garrett Celek, Ross Dwelley and Marcus Lucas as the tight ends currently on the 49ers roster.

49ers Select OT Justin Skule with Pick No. 183 in 2019 NFL Draft

With the 183rd pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers selected Vanderbilt tackle Justin Skule.

Skule (6-foot-7, 317 pounds) started all 25 games for the Commodores over the last two seasons, and became a dependable tackle. He played right tackle to begin his career before making the switch to the left side.

Skule adds depth behind Joe Staley and Mike McGlinchey. He’ll compete with Shon Coleman and Daniel Brunskill to be the team’s swing tackle in 2019.

49ers Select CB Tim Harris with Pick No. 198 in 2019 NFL Draft

With the 198th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers selected Virginia cornerback Tim Harris.

Harris (6-foot-2, 197 pounds) played for six seasons at Virginia, which includes two medical redshirt seasons. He posted 36 total tackles and two interceptions as a senior in 2018. Over the course of his entire career with the Cavaliers, he racked up 109 tackles and four picks.

NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein said that Harris has rare size, speed and explosiveness. Harris’ injury history contributed to his fall in the draft. He ran a 4.45-second 40-yard dash at his pro day. Zierlein anticipated that Harris would be a priority undrafted free agent, but clearly the 49ers wanted to take a flier on the corner’s traits with their final pick in this year’s draft.
